Israel municipality Mashhad ( , , Mash-hed transliteration, grave of a holy man ) is an Arab town located to mi northeast of Nazareth in Israel 's North District .¹ According to the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics , the town had a population of 6,700 mostly Muslim inhabitants.² Mashhad became a local council in 1960. The town is said to be the site of Jonah 's grave and his birthplace (2 Kings 14:25), called Gath-Hefer in Biblical times, a village in the tribe of Zebulun (Joshua 19:13).³
