A resistance movement1 is an organized effort by a group of people to oppose or challenge an established authority, such as a government or an occupying power. Such movements may seek to change, reform, or overthrow existing power structures and can employ a range of methods, including nonviolent resistance (such as civil disobedience) and violent or armed struggle. In practice, resistance movements often combine multiple strategies and may operate through different organizations or across distinct phases or geographical areas.

This article defines "resistance movement," the umbrella term Wikipedia applies to groups including Palestinian armed factions. Through 2020 the opening noted that "resistance movement" and "freedom fighters" "can become ambiguous terms for what other observers might describe as terrorists." Today the opening defines the term without that qualifier, and terror appears zero times in the opening though it survives eight times in the article. A reader today learns only the definition of a resistance movement, and not that Wikipedia's own opening once flagged the term as ambiguous with terrorism.
