What is the difference between Islam, a Muslim, and an Islamist?

Islam is the religion. A Muslim is a person who follows it, around 1.9 billion people, the vast majority living ordinary, peaceful lives. An Islamist wants Islam to govern the state and the law, by force if needed. Criticising Islamism, the political project of groups like Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Iranian regime, is not an attack on Muslims or on Islam. Blurring the three is how honest debate gets shut down as 'Islamophobia.'

Is anti-Zionism the same as antisemitism?

Accepted Answer

Criticising an Israeli government or policy is not antisemitism and should never be treated as one. But denying the Jewish people alone the right to a state that every other nation claims, holding Israel to a standard no other country faces, or blaming all Jews for it, crosses the line the IHRA definition draws. The test is the double standard, not the act of criticism.

What is the difference between a Jew, an Israeli, and a Zionist?

A Jew belongs to the Jewish people and faith, and most live outside Israel. An Israeli is a citizen of Israel, and about a fifth of Israelis are Arab, not Jewish. A Zionist is anyone, Jewish or not, who supports a Jewish homeland. The three are blurred on purpose, so that 'Zionist' can serve as a polite cover for 'Jew.'

Judaism is a 3,000-year-old religion and peoplehood. Zionism is the modern movement, born in the 19th century, for Jewish self-determination in that people's ancestral homeland. Related, but not the same: there are religious anti-Zionists and secular Zionists alike.

The word antisemitism was coined in Germany in 1879 to mean one thing: hatred of Jews. It has never meant hostility to everyone who speaks a Semitic language. 'Arabs are Semites too, so it cannot be antisemitism' is a word game, not an argument.

Hamas is a designated terrorist organisation that seized Gaza by force in 2007 and has held no election since. The land changed hands in a defensive war in 1967 and had no recognised sovereign before that, since Jordan's 1948 annexation was recognised by almost no one. That is why Israel and many legal scholars call it disputed, to be settled by negotiation under UN Resolution 242, rather than simply 'occupied.' Its legal status is genuinely contested.

Why are there still millions of Palestinian refugees after 75 years?

Every other refugee population on earth is handled by the UN's main refugee agency and shrinks as people resettle and generations pass. Palestinians have a separate agency, UNRWA, that uniquely counts descendants as refugees in perpetuity. That is how a figure near 700,000 in 1948 is now reported in the millions.

Left out of the slogan: the war was launched to destroy the new state after the Arab side rejected partition, and some 850,000 Jews were driven from Arab lands in the same years.
