You've been told the lands of Islam were always Muslim, or that they chose it freely. Iran was Zoroastrian. Egypt was Coptic. Anatolia, Syria and North Africa were Christian. Java was Hindu and Buddhist. None of them flipped in a day, and that is exactly why no one answers for it.
A massacre has a date, a place and a perpetrator. A four-hundred-year squeeze has none. Each generation paid a tax for keeping its faith, lived under a law that ranked it second, and watched its children buy their way up by converting. No one generation did it, so no one generation is blamed. The record below is how the squeeze worked, where it worked with armies and where it worked without them, and where it is still working now.
The sword took the land. The law took the people, slowly, and made sure they never came back.

The second-class contract · The Pact of Umar
The classical terms imposed on conquered Christians, in their own voice: We shall not build, in our cities or in their neighborhood, new monasteries, Churches, convents, or monks' cells, nor shall we repair, by day or by night, such of them as fall in ruins.
No crosses shown in Muslim streets, bells only as clappers… very softly,
no weapons, no saddles, no Muslim dress. And one clause that only runs one way: We shall not prevent any of our kin from entering Islam if they wish it.

The lock · Apostasy
All four Sunni schools of law held that a Muslim who leaves Islam is to be killed. Conversion in, open; conversion out, a capital crime. Every convert, and every child of a convert, was counted forever. That is what turns a slow drift into a one-way ratchet.
The first expulsion · Arabia
Islam's own heartland set the pattern. The Jewish tribes of Medina were expelled or destroyed in Muhammad's lifetime, and under Caliph Umar the Jews of Khaybar and the Christians of Najran were removed from the Hijaz. You'll hear that where there was no conquest, there was no pressure. These are the cases that answer it: the same outcome, delivered by traders, migrants, marriage and a converted king.
Nubia (Sudan) · Treaty, then migration
The Arab armies failed to conquer Christian Nubia, and a treaty, the Baqt, held for six centuries. Arab tribes such as the Banu Kanz settled in and married into the Nubian elite. Nubian royal succession ran through the mother's line, so the throne passed to Muslim sons. The jizya was imposed after the Mamluk invasion of 1276, Makuria was ruled by Muslim kings from Abdallah Barshambu on, and the Christian kingdom that had outlasted the conquerors was gone within two centuries.
Maldives · 1153 · One king
A Buddhist kingdom became Muslim when its last Buddhist king converted in 1153, persuaded by a single visiting preacher. Temples were torn down over the following years, and the Dhanbidhu Lomafanu, a royal copper-plate record, describes monks in the southern atolls taken to Malé and beheaded, and stupas and statues destroyed. Today the constitution makes Islam a condition of citizenship: the country is 100% Muslim by law.
Java & Malaya · Ports, then sultans
Muslim merchants settled the trading ports, married locally and converted port rulers, Malacca's in the 15th century. The new sultanates, led by Demak, then broke Majapahit, the last great Hindu-Buddhist empire, in the early 16th century. Where the sultans never reached, on Bali, Hinduism survives today. The ports came first. The swords came later.
The Mongols · The conquerors converted
The Mongols destroyed Baghdad in 1258. Within two generations their own khans had converted, the Ilkhanate in 1295, and the empire that had crushed the caliphate ruled as a Muslim one.

Anatolia · 1914 to today
Christians were roughly 20 to 25% of the Ottoman population in 1914. The Armenian, Assyrian and Greek genocides, the 1923 population exchange, the 1942 Varlık Vergisi wealth tax on non-Muslims and the 1955 Istanbul pogrom against Greeks and Armenians left them at about 0.3 to 0.6%. Lebanon · 1932 to today
The last census, in 1932, found a Christian majority of about 54%. Emigration, birth rates, the PLO's arrival, fifteen years of civil war and the Taif Agreement later, the US State Department puts Christians at 30.5%. Bangladesh · 1951 to 2022
Hindus were 22.05% of East Pakistan in 1951, 13.5% in 1974 and 7.95% in the 2022 census. The census itself names out-migration as a cause: they are leaving.
Iraq · 2003 to today
Christian leaders counted 800,000 to 1.4 million Christians in 2003. The US State Department's 2023 report puts the number still in the country at fewer than 150,000. In 2014 ISIS gave the Christians of Mosul a choice: convert, pay the jizya, or die. They fled.
The Jews of the Arab world · 1948 to today
About 850,000 Jews lived across the Arab world and Iran, in communities older than Islam. Almost all were expelled or forced out, and most of those communities now number in the dozens. The forgotten refugees →
You'll be told there is no word for this because there is no such thing. Wikipedia has the word. It depends which century you ask about.
Wikipedia treats the historical process as fact. Islamization redirects to its article Spread of Islam, and it runs full articles titled Islamization of Iran, Islamization of Egypt and Islamization of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with conversion curves, forced conversions and church destruction stated in its own voice.
Ask about the same process now and every door is labelled. Demographic jihad carries the short description "Islamophobic conspiracy theory". Counter-jihad is a "far-right anti-Muslim movement". Great Replacement redirects to Great Replacement conspiracy theory. Eurabia was renamed Eurabia conspiracy theory. And the Muslim Brotherhood's own 1991 strategy document, the one that calls its work in America a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within,

The article opens: a purported phenomenon in which Muslims migrate to or have many children in a particular region in order to achieve demographic and perceived political or social dominance.
