Part of a larger complex, historically it started as part of a Christian church and monastery, which later became an Islamic mosque , Zawiyat al-Adawiya ('the zawiya of [Rabia] al-Adawiya '), and is located on a site believed since the Byzantine period to be the earthly spot where Jesus ascended into Heaven after his Resurrection . It houses a slab of stone believed to contain one of his footprints.
