Chaverim ( , literally, "friends"), also spelled Chaveirim , is an umbrella name for Jewish volunteer organizations on the East Coast of the United States which assist people in any sort of emergency or difficulty, at home or on the road.1Chaverim volunteers perform the following duties, as well as many others: Open cars when keys have been accidentally locked inside "Boost" stalled cars Give directions for those in unfamiliar areas Give a ride home to someone whose car is disabled Locate a mechanic or tow company Obtain gas if someone's gas tank runs dry Assist people locked out of their home/vehicle Assist with burst pipes Assist with loss of essential services such as gas, electric, water, or telephone Assist with fallen trees Gather a minyan of men for a simcha or shiva Assist when stuck in sand, mud, snow, gravel, etc. Chaverim also provides free 10-minute safety inspections of vehicles prior to the August summer vacation period to draw drivers' attention to safety issues with their cars. Many Chaverim volunteers are professional tradesmen who donate their professional skills to provide emergency assistance.2
