El Al Flight 426 was hijacked on July 23, 1968 by three members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine .1The aircraft was en route from London Heathrow Airport to Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport and then to Lod Airport , now known as Ben Gurion International Airport . The plane was later diverted to Dar El Beïda airport in Algiers . Algeria formally declared war on Israel following the 1967 Arab-Israeli War . At the time, the Algerian authorities believed El Al to be a paramilitary organization because it carried military cargo for the Israel Defense Forces , and impounded the plane and detained the 22 Israeli nationals after it landed.2
