Erez Crossing

It is located in the northern end of the Gaza Strip , on the border with Israel . It is part of a complex formerly including the Erez Industrial Park . The crossing is currently restricted to Arab residents under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority and to Egyptian nationals or international aid officials only.

It is located in the northern end of the Gaza Strip , on the border with Israel . It is part of a complex formerly including the Erez Industrial Park . The crossing is currently restricted to Arab residents under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority and to Egyptian nationals or international aid officials only. The modern hangar-style building is large, with an area of about 35,000 m (375,000 sq ft) and capable of handling 45,000 people per day. It currently (September 2nd, 2014) only handles 400 people per day. It was completed in 2007 at a cost of $60 million. (Per the New York Times article by Jodi Rudoren "Gaza Crossing" published September 2, 2014.) The crossing connects Israel's Highway 4 with Gaza's Salah al-Din Road . Until the early 1970s the rail line which connected Israel and Gaza also passed through Erez Crossing. Nowadays the railway in the Gaza Strip is dismantled and on the Israeli side, Israel Railways ' active rail line ends about 4.5 km northeast of the crossing, though in the future it may be re-extended to the crossing to provide cargo service to the Gaza Strip.

The Erez Crossing is managed by the Israel Defense Forces , unlike the Karni Crossing and the Kerem Shalom Crossing , which are managed by the Israel Airports Authority . Usage of the Erez Crossing is restricted to Palestinians living under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian National Authority , Egyptian citizens and nationals, and international aid officials .
