The opening as it read in 2010

The Emancipation of the Jews in England was the culmination of efforts in the 19th Century over several hundred years to loosen the legal restrictions set in place on England's Jewish population.1 The nation's mercantile class had long recognized Jews as an economic asset, and they and their allies in Parliament sought and eventually won the passage of laws that placed male Jews in England on an equal legal footing with the kingdom's other emancipated males.2
