Mousa Mohammed Abu Marzook ( ; born January 9, 1951, in the Rafah refugee camp , Gaza Strip ) is a senior member of the Palestinian organization Hamas . Since 1997 he has served as the Deputy Chairman of Hamas Political Bureau , the highest ranking body in Hamas. Abu Marzook provided substantial funds to the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF) in the early 1990s. In 1994, Abu Marzook designated HLF as the primary fund-raising entity for Hamas in the United States. Active in the Islamic political work since 1968, Abu Marzook played a significant role in reorganizing Hamas after the mass arrest of its members in 1989. He was elected to be the first Hamas political bureau chief in 1992, and since 1997 he has held the position of the deputy of Hamas politburo chief. Abu Marzook founded and funded the Islamic Association of Palestine . In 2002, a federal grand jury in Dallas returned an indictment against Marzook for conspiring to violate U.S. laws that prohibit dealings in terrorist funds. The indictment alleged that Marzook conspired with the Richardson, Texas -based InfoCom Corporation and five of its employees to hide his financial transactions with the computer company. Abu Marzook allegedly invested $250,000 in InfoCom, with Infocom to make payments based on the company's net profit/loss. In 2004, a U.S. court indicted him in absentee for coordinating and financing Hamas activities. Musa Abu Marzuq resides in Springfield, Virginia and runs the Hamas from there.
