The opening as it read in 2005
Sexuality in Islam is decreed by the Qur'an and by religous leaders to be confined to marital relationships. The use of the hijab to hide the female form exemplifies the degree to which these religious mores are significant to some Muslim societies. This is not, however, unusual. The same can be said of the religious texts and pronouncements of Judaism , Catholicism and most other branches of Christianity . Abstinence education programs in the United States similarly seek to convince people to constrict expressions of sexuality to marital relationships. The Qur'an specifically forbids intercourse during a woman's period of menstruation , while fasting during Ramadan , and while on the pilgrimage to Mecca ( hajj ). The Qur'an states: It is lawful for you to go in unto your wives during the night preceding the (day's) fast: they are as a garment for you, and you are as a garment for them. God is aware that you would have deprived yourselves of this right, and so He has turned unto you in His mercy and removed this hardship from you. Now, then, you may lie with them skin to skin, and avail yourselves to that which God has ordained for you.(2:187) The Qur'an does condemn homosexuality , appears to permit masturbation (if necessary to relieve desires that might otherwise lead to adultery ), generally permits contraception , and prohibits abortion after some set period, which is debated by Islamic scholars to be between 40 and 120 days.1

This is a sub-article of Islamic marital jurisprudence and human sexuality .Sexuality in Islam is largely described by the holy book (the Qur'an ), the sayings of Mohammed ( hadith ), and the rulings of religious leaders' ( fatwa ) as being confined to marital relationships between men and women. While most traditions discourage celibacy , all encourage strict chastity and modesty with regards to any relationships across gender lines, holding forth that intimacy as perceived within Islam -- encompassing a swathe of life more broad than strictly sex—is largely to be reserved for marriage. This sensitivity to gender difference and modesty ( hijab ) outside of marriage can be seen in current prominent aspects of Islam—interpretations of Islamic dress and degrees of gender segregation , for example. While prohibitions against adulterous relationships are strong, permissible sexual relationships are described in Islamic sources as great wells of love and closeness for the couple involved.Specific occasions—most notably daytime fasting and menstruation—are times forbidden for intercourse, though not for other ways of touching and being close to one another.Issues such as masturbation and homosexuality are frowned upon or outright forbidden; contraceptive use is permitted, as is abortion, though the latter often with great restriction.

Sexuality in Islam contains a wide range of views and laws, which are largely predicated on the Quran , and the sayings attributed to Muhammad ( hadith ) and the rulings of religious leaders ( fatwa ) confining sexual intercourse to relationships between men and women. All instructions regarding sex in Islam are considered parts of, firstly, Taqwa or obedience and secondly, Iman or faithfulness to God . Islamic marital jurisprudence allows Muslim men to be married to multiple women (a practice known as polygyny ). The Quran and the hadiths allow Muslim men to have sexual intercourse only with Muslim women in marriage ( nikāḥ ) and " what the right hand owns " ( Arabic : ما ملكت أيمانکم).This historically permitted Muslim men to have extramarital sex with concubines and sex slaves . Contraceptive use is permitted for birth control. Acts of homosexual intercourse are prohibited , although Muhammad, the main prophet of Islam, never forbade non-sexual relationships.
