Shlomo Argov ( 1929 - 2003 ) was the Israeli ambassador to the United Kingdom whose attempted killing provided the pretext for Israel's Invasion of Lebanon . On June 3 , 1982 , three men approached Argov as he got into his car in London . One man shot Argov through the head. He was not killed, though he remained in a coma for three months. The events left him paralyzed for life. The attempted assassins were members of Abu Nidal 's rival organization sponsored by Iraq. Israel used the attack as a pretext for launching the 1982 Lebanon War .1
