It was constructed between 1892 and 1900, under the direction of Sultan Abu Bakar . The architecture of the mosque was largely based on the colonial English Victorian architecture and Middle Eastern Moorish architecture elements, along with some minor Malay influence, thanks to the Anglophile rulers of Johor in those days, just like many others old historic government and palace buildings in Johor .
