Diplomatic relations were established in 1994 between the Vatican and Israel as a result of the Fundamental Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Israel , which was signed on 30 December 1993. Archbishop Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo , who had been Apostolic Delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine since 1990, was appointed the first Apostolic Nuncio to Israel.
