Asfur is an Israeli television series which is broadcast on the channel HOT3 . The series deals with issues like the rat race , social inequality, etc., through the story of four Jerusalem men that decided to live in abandoned buses on a farm that's owned by Motti, (played by the actor Shalom Michaelshvilli ) which was given to him after his grandfather died. The series has many sub-plots, but the main plot deals with how the four men try to settle an enormous debt on the farm to the Jerusalem City Hall. The Word "Asfur" is Arabic for ‘bird’. In the series, the word has several meanings: it’s the nickname Motti’s grandfather gave him as a child, as well as an alleged mythical bird of good fortune; a policeman uses it as a slang term for a police spy; Motti describes a child acquaintance of his as an ‘asfur wanuss’ (a bird and a half) to describe his small and still weak body, etc. The series is special in the characters’ extensive use of Jerusalem slang , which most Israelis are usually very unfamiliar with. The series received outstanding critical response and overwhelming popularity, and it was said that Hot (Israel) has already started working on a second season even before the television pilot was aired.
