Eliyahu Hakim ( 1925 - 22 March 1945 ) was a member of the Stern Gang who was executed in Egypt for assassinating of Lord Moyne , the British Minister Resident in the Middle East .1Born in Beirut , Hakim immigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine when he was seven, and grew up in the port city of Haifa . He joined the Stern Gang as a teen, but volunteered for the British Army during World War II .2Posted to Cairo , Hakim deserted from the army in order to continue his anti-British activities on behalf of the Stern Gang. He gained a reputation as a daring fighter who participated in many brazen attacks, including the failed assassination attempt against Harold MacMichael , the British High Commissioner for Palestine in 1944 . They were caught immediately and put on trial before a military court. They were both hanged in Cairo on 22 March 1945, singing Hatikvah , the Zionist anthem, from the gallows . Their remains were brought to Israel in 1975 and reburied on Mount Herzl with full military honors.3
