On January 29, 2004 a suicide bombing on Egged bus number 19 in Jerusalem , Israel , killed 11 civilians and wounded over 50 people, 13 of them seriously. The explosion took place shortly before 9:00 AM at the corner of Gaza and Arlozorov streets, just outside Ariel Sharon's official residence in Jerusalem. The bus started its route at Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital , and was supposed to end it at Mount Scopus . The bomber was in the back of the bus when he detonated the explosives, said Jerusalem Police Chief Mickey Levy. The blast tore the bus apart, blowing the back half of the roof into the air and breaking every window. Both the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades and Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred less than 24 hours after eight Palestinians were killed in an Israeli army raid on the outskirts of Gaza, naming the bomber as Ali Yusuf Jaara, a 24-year-old Palestinian policeman from Bethlehem .
