Lily Safra (born in 1937 in Surrey, England ) is an extremely wealthy socialite . Although she came from a fairly modest background, she gained considerable wealth from several marriages. At the age of 19, she married Mario Cohen, an Argentinean hosiery magnate, but divorced him in the early 1960s . In 1965 , she married Freddy Monteverde, a notable figure in the Brazilian electrical distribution business. However, Monteverde committed suicide 1969, and left his widow £160 million. She had a third marriage in 1972 , but it did not last. In 1976 , she married Edmond Safra , a Jewish-Lebanese banker. The couple maintained a stylish, international lifestyle, complete with homes in New York , London , Geneva and the French Riviera . In 1999 her husband, along with one of his nurses, perished in a fire at their apartment in Monaco ; Safra survived, as she was in another wing of the apartment at the time and was able to make her way out of the burning building. Another nurse, Ted Maher, was arrested under suspicion of starting the fire, and was convicted of the crime in 2002 . Lily Safra was ranked as the 620th richest person in the world by Forbes in 2005 with a net worth of $1 billion. She is frequently seen in the social pages of London and the United States, but she's also known for her philanthropic efforts; she is the chairman of the Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation, and she's on the board of the Michael J.1
