The campaign followed the failed First Suez Expedition (1915), and was overseen by Djemal Pasha and his German allies, notably Friedrich Freiherr Kress von Kressenstein . Although the Ottomans achieved a limited tactical victory at the Battle of Katia in April 1916, their larger offensive was halted at the Battle of Romani in August. British defenses, reinforced by ANZAC troops, inflicted a defeat that forced the Ottomans to retreat to the El Arish line. The campaign failed to inspire an Egyptian uprising and coincided with the beginning of the Arab Revolt , which further strained Ottoman resources and contributed to the strategic failure of the expedition.
