Shlomo Lahiani ( , born 1965) is an Israeli politician and the current mayor of Bat Yam . He was first elected mayor as a Labour -backed independent in 2003 with 45% of the vote, beating the Likud candidate. He was subsequently re-elected, with 86.3% of the vote, reportedly the highest ever in a large Israeli city, in 2008. In September 2009 Lahiani got involved in a scandal over campaign funding. He was accused of campaign expenditure irregularities, especially regarding a 43,000 NIS , of public finds, payment made to his wife, Dorit, for campaign management, during the election campaign in November 2008. In December 2009 Lahiani was arrested by the police. Investigators suspect that Lahiani may have committed economic crimes over a prolonged period, among them fraud, official misconduct and excessive waste of public funds.1
