Unit 101 was the Israeli commando unit, founded and commanded by Ariel Sharon, that carried out the 1953 raid on the village of Qibya in which dozens of unarmed residents were killed. The 2010 opening paragraph named that raid the Qibya massacre. Today the opening describes the unit's work only as retribution operations, and massacre appears nowhere in it, though the word survives 4 times in the body. A reader today learns the unit conducted retribution operations across the border, not that the raid it is remembered for is called a massacre.

The opening as it read in 2010
Unit 101 was a special forces unit of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF), founded and commanded by Ariel Sharon on orders from Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion in August 1953.1It was created in order to better deal with a spate of Arab fedayeen attacks against Israelis, which the IDF was unsuccessful in halting. The unit was merged into Battalion 890 during January 1954, mainly due to the fact that they killed dozens of unarmed enemy citizens during the raid known as Qibya massacre into the village of Qibya . Beside the Sayeret Matkal , they are considered to be the unit with the most influence on the Israeli infantry oriented units—including both special and conventional units.2

Unit 101 was an Israeli special operations unit founded and led by Ariel Sharon on orders from Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion in August 1953. It has drawn much criticism due to deaths of innocent civilians, in particular the Qibya operation , which left almost 70 civilians dead. It was disbanded in late 1955 . However, its decisive style of action developed in its later attacks against heavily-guarded military objectives became one of the fundamental cornerstones in the development of the Israel Defence Forces .
