Uri Sagi

Uri Sagi ( ; born 1943) was an Israeli general (retired) who held several prominent posts including command of the Golani Brigade , of Israel's Northern Command , and the IDF Military Intelligence Directorate .¹ Uri Sagi was born in Kfar Bialik to a family who had been living in Israel for several generations. He was a commander of a platoon in Battalion 51 during the Six Day War. He climbed the ranks of the IDF and became commander of the Golani Brigade . During the 1982 Lebanon War he was in charge Operations Command within the IDF 's General Staff . In 1983 he was promoted to the rank of Aluf and given charge of the Northern Command . In 1986 till 1991 he was in command of GOC Army Headquarters , and in 1991-1995 he was in charge of the Military Intelligence Directorate . He resigned from the IDF in 1995 due to a conflict between him and the Chief of General Staff . In 1996 he joined the Israeli Labor Party , but during the primaries that year failed to secure a place in the party's list for the upcoming elections. In December 1999, then, Prime Minister of Israel Ehud Barak put him in charge of negotiations with Syria for a peace treaty. The negotiations failed as Syria refused to enter direct negotiations until Israel withdrew from the Golan Heights as a pre-condition.² In 2000-2003 Uri Sagi was the CEO of Mekorot , Israel's national water company.
