Western Desert Campaign or the Desert War , took place in the Western Desert of Egypt and Libya and was a theatre in the North African Campaign during the Second World War .1The campaign began in September 1940, with the Italian invasion of Egypt . The Italians halted to bring up supplies and a British five-day raid in December 1940 turned into Operation Compass , resulting in the destruction of the Italian 10th Army . Benito Mussolini sought help from Hitler and a small German blocking detachment [( Sperrverband )] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup ( help ) was sent to Tripoli under Directive 22 (11 January), being the first units of the Afrika Korps ( Generalleutnant Erwin Rommel ), under nominal Italian command but Italian dependency on Nazi Germany made it the dominant partner. In two years, Axis forces under Rommel pushed the British, Commonwealth and allied forces back to the Egypt three times but failed to gain a decisive victory. On the final Axis push the Allies retreated to El Alamein, where at the Second Battle of El Alamein the Eighth Army defeated the Axis forces. The Axis forces never recovered and were driven out of Libya to Tunisia , where they were defeated in the Tunisia Campaign . After the British defeats in the Balkan Campaign , the Western Desert Campaign had become more important to British strategy. The Axis never had sufficient resources or the means to deliver them to defeat the British, who in their turn missed several opportunities to finish the campaign, by diverting resources to Greece and the Levant in 1941 and the Far East in 1942.2

The Western Desert Campaign was the primary early theatre of the North African Campaign of World War II . It is sometimes referred to as the Egypt-Libya Campaign . It was continuous back-and-forth struggle fought by the Axis powers — at first only from Fascist Italy , although Nazi Germany later became the dominant partner — against the Allies , represented primarily by Commonwealth forces. After entering World War II, the United States supplied a small US Army Air Force contingent in support of the campaign.
