Yuval Ne'eman is an Israeli physicist and politician. He was born in Tel Aviv , Israel. Active against the British in Palestine (1946–7), he became a captain in the Israeli Defence Force (1947), deputy director of defence intelligence (1955–7), and defence attaché in London (1958–60). In 1962, he proposed (independently from Murray Gell-Mann ) the classification of hadrons through their SU(3) flavour symmetry — today known as the quark model . He was professor of physics at Tel Aviv (1965–73), then at the University of Texas, Austin , and (1979–97) director of the Sackler Institute of Advanced Studies . He founded the Tehiya political party and was a member of the Knesset (1982-92), holding ministerial posts in the areas of science and development.
