Sumayya

Sumayyah bint Khayyat ( ) was the mother of the well-known early Muslim , Ammar ibn Yasir . The earliest form of the story is found in Ibn Ishaq who narrates that she was killed in Mecca , Arabia , simply for being a Muslim. In 615 C.E., according to the history of Islam five years after Muhammads first vision of Gabriel , persecution of early Muslims became severe. Sumayyah was the first martyr of the new religion, publicly murdered by a Meccan tribal chief. The weakest members of the young community, such as the African slave Bilal , were subjected to torture and the local leaders proclaimed a ban of trade with the Muslims, prohibiting citizens of Mecca from providing food and medicine to members of the new movement. After the murder of Sumayyah, a small group of Muslims led by Mohammeds daughter Ruqayya and his son-in-law Uthman fled by boat to Abyssinia , where they found protection of the more tolerant Christian Ethiopian Negus ( King ), Aṣḥama ibn Abjar . In another place Ibn Ishaq (page 229) tells about people calling Ammar "Ibn Sumayya" which is odd (Ammar should be called Ibn Yasir) but not unheard of. From this his mothers name was deduced.

' female martyr ' ). Shortly after she was martyred, her husband Yasir ibn Amir was also killed for his conversion to Islam, making him the first male martyr ( Arabic : شهيد , romanized : shahīd ).
