Union for the Mediterranean

The Union for the Mediterranean ( , , , ), officially known by the full name of Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean (BP:UfM) and previously known as the "Mediterranean Union" , is a community initiated on 13 July 2008 by French President Nicolas Sarkozy . It is a new formulation of the existing (since 1995) Euromediterranean Partnership , also known as the Barcelona Process . The act unites all EU members with several non-EU countries that border the Mediterranean Sea . The headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean are located in Barcelona , Spain .

The Union for the Mediterranean ( UfM ) is a multilateral partnership of 43 countries from Europe and the Mediterranean Basin : the 28 member states of the European Union and 15 Mediterranean partner countries from North Africa , the Middle East and Southeast Europe . It was created in July 2008 as a relaunched Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (the Barcelona Process), when a plan to create an autonomous Mediterranean Union was dropped. The Union has the aim of promoting stability and prosperity throughout the Mediterranean region. The Union for the Mediterranean introduced new institutions into the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership such as the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean, established in Barcelona in 2010, with the aim to identify and promote regional cooperation projects that contribute to achieve its goals and objectives as indicated in its mandate. The Union for the Mediterranean is the southern regional cooperation branch, which works in parallel to the European Neighbourhood Policy . Its eastern counterpart is the Eastern Partnership .

Its general secretariat is located in Barcelona , Spain . The Union has the aim of promoting stability and integration throughout the Mediterranean region. It is a forum for discussing regional strategic issues, based on the principles of shared ownership, shared decision-making and shared responsibility between the two shores of the Mediterranean. Its main goal is to increase both North-South and South-South integration in the Mediterranean region, in order to support the countries' socioeconomic development and ensure stability in the region. The institution, through its course of actions, focuses on two main pillars: fostering human development and promoting sustainable development. To this end, it identifies and supports regional projects and initiatives of different sizes, to which it gives its label, following a consensual decision among the 43 countries. These projects and initiatives focus on 6 sectors of activity, as mandated by the UfM Member States: Business Development & Employment Higher Education & Research Social & Civil Affairs Energy & Climate Action Transport & Urban Development Water, Environment & Blue Economy
