Degel HaTorah (or Degel haTorah ) ( Hebrew for "Flag/Banner of Torah ") is an Israeli mostly Ashkenazi Haredi Judaism political party with a small number of seats (2 or 3) in the Knesset , Israel's national parliament. As of 2005 , Degel HaTorah is part of the coalition government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon . Degel HaTorah reprents the " Lithuanian wing" of Mitnagdim as opposed to the Hasidic Judaism dominated Agudat Israel party. However, the two join forces in alliance called United Torah Judaism ( Yahadut HaTorah ). The Degel HaTorah party was founded as a splinter part by Rabbi Eliezer Menachem Mann Shach in 1988 because of policy disputed with the Hasidic rebbes in Agudat Israel which had been the only party for all Ashkenazi Haredi Jews in Israel. Rabbi Shach passed away in 2001 . Degel HaTorah's rabbincal decisor ( posek ) is Rabbi Yosef Shalom Eliashiv in Jerusalem .
