Emad Akel
Emad Akel was a commander of Hamas's Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, killed by Israeli forces in 1993. Through October 6, 2023 the opening said Hamas released a two-hour biopic celebrating his life and martyrdom. Today the word martyr survives elsewhere in the article, but the opening is two sentences naming his role and his death. A reader arriving now learns he commanded the Qassam Brigades and was killed by the IDF, not that Hamas produced a film honoring him as a martyr, written by Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar.

He was killed at age 24 in a shootout with Israeli forces at a checkpoint in 1993.1 In July 2009, Hamas released its first film, a two-hour biopic celebrating the life and "martyrdom" of Akel.2 The film was written by Hamas strongman Mahmoud al-Zahar and the interior minister , Fathi Hamad .3
