Montreal Holocaust Museum

The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre was founded in 1979 by a group of survivors of the Holocaust around Steven Cummings . The MHMC consists of both a museum and a centre. The aim of the centre is to give the survivors of the Holocaust the possibility to pass on their experiences to future generations. Contemporary witnesses also have a direct right of voice in the decision structure of the centre. The centre, which was opened in 1979 was reorganized and renovated completely for its re-opening on June 30th, 2003. It now spreads over two floors and has about 10.000m². The museum comprises 418 artifacts, 372 photographies and 18 video stations. It is held completely in two languages – French and English and tries to relate to the theme in a widespread horizon. Beside the Holocaust there will be given an insight in the Jewish live before the Holocaust chronologically starting from the upper floor. The historical background and the reasons that lead to the breakout of the Second World War and the trial for the systematically erasement of the Jews will be explained in the basement. The tour will be continued on the upper floor and leads us over the postwar period to the set-tling of many European survivors of the Holocaust in Montreal . After the Second World the third largest community of survivors was in Montreal after Israel and New York . Beside the museum the centre shows its responsibility for many more initiatives. So it organizes much projects and events about the Holocaust. Beside the annual taking place memorial event for the victims of the Holocaust “ Yom Hashoah ” and a further event to commemorate to the Reichskristallnacht called “Commémoration de Kristallnacht”, also annually the “Holocaust Education Series” a series of presentations of work related to the Holocaust and a “Bar/Bat Mitzvah in remembrance” – project takes place. In addition this year an extraordinary exhibi-tion with pictures of the concentration camp Terezin / Theresienstadt was set up. In the first year after the re-opening of the new Holocaust Museum it had more than 15.000 visitors where 65% were students. Every year more than 2000 people follow the invitation on the memorial event “Yom Hashoah”, the official Memorial Day for the victims of the Holocaust organized by the MHMC. In 2004 the event took place in the Congregation Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem Synagogue in Montreal on April 18th, 2004. The Austrian Holocaust Memorial Service supports the MHMC since 1998 by sending its Gedenkdiener – interns from Austria . The Gedenkdiener - interns have worked out a specifical area of activity for themselves in the past years and are now an important part of the team of the MHMC.

It also highlights the role of Montreal, a city that is home to the third largest Holocaust survivor population in the world. The museum tells the story of the Shoah through the eyes, the voices and the possessions of those few who survived the horrors of the Holocaust, and who made a new home in the city.
